How PDF Repair Works

When a PDF file becomes corrupted — whether due to incomplete downloads, storage media failures, or software errors — our repair tool attempts to recover the document using multiple approaches:

  1. Ghostscript recovery: Rewrites the entire PDF structure, often fixing cross-reference table errors and stream corruption.
  2. Pdftocairo conversion: Renders each page and reassembles the document, bypassing structural damage in the original file.
  3. MuPDF repair: Uses the MuTool clean command to fix common PDF specification violations and rebuild the file.

Each method has its own strengths, so the tool provides multiple output options. If one method doesn't produce a readable result, another often will.
